Who We Are
IOU, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2016. The acronym stands for “Internet of Us” — reflecting our belief that in a world of connected devices, the most important connections are between people.
We build secure, practical tools that help families protect their identities, organize critical information, and preserve what matters most. Our focus is on communities that give so much and deserve practical support in return: veterans, first responders, Gold Star families, and individuals facing debilitating conditions.
Our Commitment
Our mission programs — Deployed and IOUForever — are and will always be 100% free for eligible individuals. No credit card, no trial period, no hidden fees. This isn’t a promotion — it’s why we exist.
Community support and partnerships fund the development, security, and infrastructure that make these programs possible.
What We Believe
- • Families shouldn’t have to choose between convenience and safety
- • Privacy is a right, not a feature — we use zero-knowledge encryption so we literally cannot read your data
- • Legacy planning should be warm and accessible, not intimidating
- • The people who protect us deserve tools that protect them

An urgent message from JD Grant on the mission behind IOULegacy.Deployed
The Internet of Us
IOU started in 2016 with a letter to my kids. My son had just been born, and I wanted to put a promise in writing — about the kind of digital world I wanted to build for my family.
Everyone in tech was talking about the “Internet of Things.” But the things most impacted by things are us — people. Our families. So I wrote down a simple idea: IOU — the Internet of Us.
With it came a set of promises:
- • IOU — Safety
- • IOU — Security
- • IOU — Privacy
- • IOU — Technology
- • IOU — Life
- • IOU — More
After dealing with my own health challenges, losing my mother, and reflecting on my time in service, those promises became personal. I realized how many families are left scrambling when the unexpected happens — whether it’s a deployment, a diagnosis, or just the reality that none of us are promised tomorrow.
That’s especially true for the millions of people living with ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, MS, and other conditions that slowly take away your ability to do the things you keep putting off. If that’s you or someone you love, our programs give you a way to get your affairs in order, preserve your story, and protect your family — while you still can.
At the end of the day, IOU is exactly what it sounds like. I owe you a safer world online.
