Legacy Capsules

How we protect the words you leave behind

A Legacy Capsule holds a message for the people you love, sealed until the moment you choose. For veterans, first responders, and Gold Star families, it is free.

The hardest messages are the ones meant for later. A letter for a child’s eighteenth birthday. A video for a spouse. Words you want said if you cannot say them yourself. IOU built Legacy Capsules to hold those messages safely, and to deliver them exactly when they are meant to arrive.

How a capsule works

1
Write it
Choose who it is for, then write a letter, record a video, or attach a document.
2
Seal it
Sealing encrypts the capsule and stamps it with a SHA-256 fingerprint. After this it cannot be edited.
3
Set the release rule
Decide when it opens: a date, a period of inactivity, or your own manual release. For deployed members, silence never triggers a release on its own. A real person confirms first.
4
They receive it
When the rule fires, the recipient gets a private link. They see your message and proof it was never altered.

Why it stays safe

We designed capsules so that we cannot read them, and so that no single breach can open them. Opening a capsule needs both halves of the key at the same time. A stolen link cannot do it. A breach of our database cannot do it.

🔗 Recipient’s link
Carries key shard A — half the secret

🖥️ Our server
Holds key shard B — the other half

🔓 Both halves open it
The capsule decrypts for the recipient
A link alone can’t open it. The server alone can’t open it.

Legacy Capsules are part of IOU’s mission. For those who have served and sacrificed, and for the families they leave behind, they are free.
